Finance

A household's finances, properly kept.

Accounts, postings, income statement and balance sheet, a budget with a forecast, bills and recurring costs, and at the end of the year everything together for the tax return.

Double entry, in plain words

A chart of accounts with assets, liabilities, income and expenses, and for each posting the plain question: where does the money go, where does it come from. A household starts from a template of some sixty Swiss household accounts that can be edited in Excel or a text editor.

  • Split one payment over several accounts
  • Foreign currencies with the amount the bank converted
  • Receipts on every posting, filed as files
  • Income statement, balance sheet and net worth for any period

Import statements, never post twice

NODAtrail reads the CSV export from e-banking or the credit card and shows every row with its status before anything is posted. The other account is learnt per counterparty, transfers are recognised, and a payment that settles a known bill marks it paid.

A budget that keeps up

One budget per year, line by line: what it costs, how often, from when and paid from which account. Months whose statements are in are closed and show what happened, the others the plan. The rolling year shows plan, actual and remainder, with a forecast for the whole year.

Bills, recurring costs, purchases

Open, due, overdue, paid: a bill's status follows from its dates. When a bill is marked paid, NODAtrail checks whether the payment is already posted and warns before anything would be posted twice. Subscriptions and contracts make their own bills.

Payslips, tax statements and the tax return

Every month of a bank account shows its statement or a clear Missing, every month with salary its payslip. The Taxes page gathers for the tax year what each account needs, plus the return, the assessment and the receipts.

  • One statement covering several accounts, as with pillar 3a
  • Chart, statements and yearly plan as PDF sheets

Good to know

  • You set the exchange rates yourself. Nothing is fetched from the internet.
  • Amounts in different currencies are never simply added together.
  • Orders from Food show among the purchases too.
